Viennese school authorities are checking Muslim teachers’ German following a scandal over a Muslim teacher who handed out anti-Semitic leaflets to students.

The checks are part of a recently introduced five-point plan by Social Democrat (SPÖ) Education Minister Claudia Schmied checking teaching standards, including a directive that all Muslim teachers have to be fluent German speakers.

Vienna’s Stadtschulrat city school council said today (Weds) small language deficits were found in the checks of the capital’s 169 Islamic teachers conducted over the last few days.

Vienna authorities had a close look at eleven teachers who do not hold a German degree. Three of them were ordered to sit additional German classes while the others proved to have excellent German, it was announced.

The five-point plan was introduced after Education Minister Schmied banned a Muslim man in February from teaching his religion at a Vienna secondary school after he distributed anti-Semitic leaflets to pupils.

Schmied ordered the city’s school authorities to take action against the man who had been teaching at the Cooperative Secondary School (KMS) in Brüßlgasse in the district of Ottakring.

He reportedly distributed anti-Semitic leaflets to his students. The flyers contained a list of allegedly “Jewish” firms from which, the man told the students, they should not buy anything.

One of Adolf Hitler’s personal bodyguards is to speak at a neo-Nazi rally this week.

Convicted Austrian neo-Nazi Herbert Schweiger, 85, who was a member of the 1st SS Division Leibstandarte – Adolf Hitler’s personal bodyguard regiment – will speak at a rally held by Germany’s neo-Nazi party NPD in Berlin on 1 May.

Schweiger said in a recent interview with British newspaper Daily Mail: “Our time will come. We will soon again have a leader like Adolf Hitler.”

When asked who was to blame for the current financial crisis, Schweiger said: “The Jew from Wall Street,” adding that “Hitler had the right solutions.”

Berlin authorities have said they are monitoring the planned gathering at the NPD’s federal headquarters and police have said they are planning a massive operation ahead of expected demonstrations.

A priest has shocked parishioners by welcoming them to church wearing a swastika armband.

Fascist Father Angelo Idi, 51 – who once saw off a charity box thief with a truncheon at his church in Vigevano, Italy – confessed: “I am proud of my right wing beliefs. But people shouldn’t care about my politics, they should care about how good a priest I am.”

In northern Italy where former dictator Benito Mussolini comes from the far right Italian LEGA NORD (Northern League) have their political stronghold – and there have been several instances of priests with far right views that have embarrassed the Catholic Church.

Last month a right wing Italian priest who is a member of Richard Williamson’s Pius fraternity was caught giving the Hitler salute at a neo-fascist rally – but claimed he was just trying to bless his flock.

Catholic priest Giulio Tam, well known for his extremist right views, raised his right arm when speaking at a rally of the neo-fascist Forza Nuova party in Bergamo, northern Italy.

The ultra-conservative Pius fraternity hit the headlines recently as British Catholic bishop and Holocaust denier Richard Williamson is a member.

After a picture revealed Tam raising his right hand, he argued: “The young people of the Forza Nuova wanted me to bless them. I’ll always be on their side.”

Tam regards Italian dictator Benito Mussolini as a martyr and has in the past held masses at Mussolini’s grave.

The acting chief financial officer of struggling US mortgage giant Freddie Mac has been found dead after apparently killing himself, police say.

Fairfax County Police said there was no foul play suspected in the death of David Kellermann, found in his home 20km (13 miles) west of Washington DC.

The 41-year-old had worked for the company for 16 years and became chief financial officer in September.

Freddie Mac was bailed out by the US government last year.

Police were investigating the death after being called to the house just before 0500 local time by Mr Kellermann’s wife.

“We were called from inside the house to come investigate an apparent suicide,” a Fairfax police spokeswoman told local media, according to AFP news agency.

Finance investigation

US media reports said Mr Kellermann was found hanging in the basement of the house.

In March Freddie Mac revealed a loss of $50.1bn (£36.1bn) for 2008, and said it planned to ask the US government for another $31bn of aid.

The company received $13.8bn in federal aid last year.

It also said in March that it was co-operating with an investigation by the Securities and Exchange Commission, and that employees had spoken to investigators.

(CNN) – As he campaigned for the White House in 2008, President Obama raked in millions of dollars in book royalties, according to recently filed Senate disclosure forms.

The president earned close to $2.5 million last year from royalties from 2006’s The Audacity of Hope and 1995’s Dreams from My Father, according to his Senate disclosure forms, filed with the Secretary of Senate’s office earlier this week.

The Audacity of Hope — first published in paperback last summer — earned him $1,512,933, while Dreams of My Father earned $950,000.
An attachment to the disclosure form also reveals Obama agreed to a $500,000 advance days before his inauguration for an abridged version of Dreams from My Father “suitable for middle grade or young adult readers.”
The president has also agreed to pen a non-fiction book for the Crown Publishing Group after he leaves office. A dollar figure on that advance has not been worked out.

ATHENS (EJP)—The Greek Jewish community said Friday it was “shocked” after neo-Nazi militant Kostas Plevris, who wrote a book denying the Holocaust and containing offensive references to Jews, was acquitted by an Appeals court in Athens.
