The British government has estimated 150,000 British children may have been shipped abroad between 1618 and 1967, most from the late 19th century onward. After 1920, most of the children went to Australia through programs run by the government, religious groups and children’s charities. The programs, which ended 40 years ago, were intended to provide the children with a new start — and the Empire with a supply of sturdy white workers. But many children ended up in institutions where they were physically and sexually abused, or were sent to work as farm laborers. At a ceremony in the Australian capital of Canberra attended by tearful former child migrants, Rudd apologized for his country’s role in the migration and extended condolences to the 7,000 survivors of the program who still live in Australia. “We are sorry,” Rudd said. “Sorry that as children you were taken from your families and placed in institutions where so often you were abused. A British man who raped his daughters and fathered nine children by them has been jailed for life.
The 56-year-old man repeatedly raped his daughters, who between them went through 19 pregnancies, Shefield Crown Court heard.
The campaign started when the women were aged between eight and 10. If they refused their father’s advances, they were badly beaten.
Judge Alan Goldsack QC ordered the man, who cannot be named for legal reasons, to serve 25 life sentences that will run concurrently.
He said the minimum term the rapist should serve in jail should be 19-and-a-half years.
Judge Goldsack said: “The phrase ‘it is difficult to imagine a worse case’ is much overused and rarely, if ever, true. I am not going to say no case of rape within a family situation will ever come to light.”
But I can say that in nearly 40 years of dealing with criminal cases and 14 as a family judge the combination of aggravating circumstances here is the worst I have come across.

The man admitted 25 rapes and four indecent assaults.
His actions echo those of the Austrian dungeon dad Joseph Fritzl, who fathered seven children with his daughter after imprisoning her in a cellar.
But unlike Fritzl, the British father controlled his victims with decades of mental torture.
The judge added: “I have little doubt that many members of the public hearing the facts of this case will consider either you should never be released from prison or only when you are old and infirm. I agree with that view.”
A spokesman for South Yorkshire police said the main concern was for the victims of “the terrible ordeal”.
He said:”You cannot begin to imagine the trauma and the suffering that (his daughters) have been through.”
A policeman who downloaded indecent images of children has been given three years probation.
The offence came to light, after William Neil McGonigle, 39, was caught trying to photograph two schoolgirls changing at a leisure centre.
Judge Norman Lockie told a court in Antrim on Thursday that McGonigle should be given the opportunity of a treatment programme for sex offenders.
McGonigle, a father-of-three, was dismissed from the PSNI two months ago.
His address was given in court as c/o PSNI Headquarters. He was dismissed from the force after pleading guilty in June to making indecent images of a child and attempting to do so in 2006.
Judge Lockie said he had “decided, after much anxious thought and reflection, that the option of an immediate custodial sentence would not, by itself serve to safeguard children” from McGonigle re-offending.
He said he believed the best way “to achieve that essential objective”, was that McGonigle, who is originally from Tandragee, be given the oportunity “to fully engage in a treatment and rehabilitation programme” for sex offenders.
Judge Lockie stressed “the public can be assured by me this is not an easy option”, and nor was it simply “a slap on the wrist”.
Child rapist jailed
A man has been jailed for ten years for the drunken rape of a girl in Bradford.
The terrified youngster later gave birth on the living floor of her home after keeping her pregnancy secret in shame of the attack.
Her horrified mother delivered the boy at 4am one day last April after her daughter called to her for help, Bradford Crown Court was told.
Tonderal Chakanyuka, 31, stood impassively in the dock at Bradford Crown Court yesterday as his barrister said “the dreadful affair” had destroyed lives.
The Zimbabwean, of Canterbury Avenue, Canterbury, Bradford, admitted forcing himself on the girl, who was a virgin, and having unprotected sex with her.
Prosecutor Nikki Peers said Chakanyuka had pleaded guilty to the offence of raping a child under 13 after he was trapped by DNA evidence.
Miss Peers said the girl, who cannot be identified, had not dared tell her mother that she had been raped but she had confided to a friend that she had had sex.
Shortly before last Christmas, she feared she might be pregnant after feeling something moving inside her. The frightened girl hid her secret from her family for several months more.
The court was told that her mother only discovered she was pregnant when alerted by her daughter’s call for help she went downstairs to find her lying on the sofa with the baby’s head visible.
The mother, who also cannot be identified, called an ambulance and delivered the infant on the living room floor as her distraught daughter cried: “I’m so sorry, Mum.”
Staff at Bradford Royal Infirmary called the police after the girl’s mother told them what had happened, Miss Peers said.
A paternity test proved Chakanyuka was the father of the baby, the court heard.
He was arrested two days after the birth and told police he could not remember having sex with the girl.
Abraham Verghese, Chakanyuka’s barrister, conceded that the “very, very, serious and disquieting” case had destroyed the life of the girl and others.
“I apologise on his behalf for this dreadful situation that has happened,” Mr Verghese said.
“The lives of several people have been destroyed. It is a most dreadful affair.”
Judge Roger Scott said the girl’s victim impact statement revealed she could no longer go to school or see her friends. She was now estranged from her mother and her baby was going into foster care.
“Goodness knows what will happen to him,” the judge said.
Jailing Chakanyuka, Judge Scott condemned his actions and said the case was aggravated because the girl had become pregnant and her mother had to deliver the baby on the living room floor.
“The whole thing could not conceivably be worse,” Judge Scott said.
Chakanyuka was put on the Sex Offenders’ Register for the rest of his life. An indefinite Sexual Offences Prevention Order was made against him and he was barred for life from working with children.
After the case, the girl’s distressed mother, who was in court to see Chakanyuka jailed, said the sentence was not long enough.
