Historic find could shed new light on key world culture

The recent discovery of an Anglo-Saxon treasure hoard in Staffordshire is of immense cultural importance to the English people, for it reveals that the culture, art and technological achievements of England and the English people over a thousand years ago were on a par with anything seen today.

The treasure hoard including sword hilts, helmets, jeweled pommels and other exotic golden goods of intricate design, are amongst the most beautiful in the history of European art.

The work reveals that the designer and goldsmith who made the items was the same individual who designed and made the Sutton Hoo treasure, as the art, design and complexity of the work is the same.

This individual, whoever he was, was the Leonardo Da Vinci of his day. He was an expert in metallurgy, abstract expressionistic art, a technical master as regards the use of metals who made the weaponry in the horde as deadly as it was beautiful. He was also a supreme propagandist.

The treasures were designed as Warrior Propaganda for an Anglo-Saxon King, and were designed to awe his opponents and vassals. One can imagine this warrior king riding onto the battlefield wearing the gold encrusted weapons and armour, and the effect this would have had on his enemies. It would have been as if one of the Norse Gods themselves, such as Odin or Fro-Ing had ridden into battle.

The items, provisionally dated to around the 7th century are on a par with the treasures of Tutankhamun, and are of international importance.

On one of the items is a Biblical inscription in Latin from the Book of Numbers, Chapter 10 verse 35 which reads: ‘Rise up, o Lord, and may thy enemies be dispersed and those who hate thee be driven from thy face’

Truly a motto for the English and England today when read in accord with the words of the East Anglian King Edmund prior to his death against the Viking invaders in 869AD: “me leofre waere thaet ic on ge-feohte feolle, with thaem the min folc moste hiera eares brucan” (I would rather fall in battle in order that my people may keep their land).

The hoard can be see in the Birmingham Museum of Art for a month from October 13th.

‘Wrong’ thinking, writing must be punished.

German police are investigating whether a string of letters from the far-right NPD party to politicians from immigrant backgrounds have incited racial hatred.

Dozens of politicians of foreign descent are running as candidates in Germany’s election this Sunday.

The NPD reportedly sent 30 of them letters advising them to “go home”.

One recipient said the two-page letter contained a “five-point plan” for “moving foreigners gradually back to their home countries”.

The letters were signed by a non-existent “commissioner for the repatriation of foreigners”.

“We are investigating whether there is a suspicion of inciting racial hatred,” said Martin Steltner, spokesman for the Berlin state prosecutor’s office, quoted by Reuters news agency.

‘This is my home’

The National Democratic Party (NPD) leader in Berlin, Joerg Haehnel, defended the letters, which were sent at the weekend.

“As part of a democracy we’re entitled to say if something doesn’t suit us in this country,” Reuters quoted him as saying.

One recipient, Green party politician Oezcan Mutlu, said he was “shocked” to get the letter.

“This is my home town. I am German. I have only German citizenship. I have no country to go to,” he told the BBC’s Oana Lungescu.

Mr Mutlu, a lawmaker in the Berlin state parliament, is used to hate mail.

“Until recently I got them from individuals anonymously, but this time a party with the name on it is addressing me privately,” he said.

“You don’t know what they can do if they have your address. I’m not afraid at all, but I have to be careful.”

Nazi-style language

Of some 50 million Germans eligible to vote in Sunday’s poll, about one in 10 has an immigrant background.

Many are ethnic Germans from the former Soviet Union, while others are Turks whose parents came to Germany to help rebuild the country after the war.

The NPD, which has around 7,000 members and has been polling poorly ahead of Sunday’s election. It has no seats in Germany’s national parliament but has some seats in regional assemblies.

The NPD uses language eerily reminiscent of Nazi propaganda, our correspondent reports.

The letter says foreigners should be excluded from the welfare system and banned from owning land in Germany.

Götz Aly, the popular historian, accused black Allied soldiers of the systematic rape of German women during the Second World War.

He also dismissed their contribution to defeating the Nazis on the grounds that they were forced to fight.

Mr Aly, the author of the controversial Hitler’s Beneficiaries, made the remarks during a press conference at “The Third World in the Second World War”, a Berlin exhibition aimed at recognising the role of thousands of Africans and Asians in defeating Nazism.

Though he was invited to speak, Mr Aly dismissed what he called a “politically correct” version of history and argued that, in fact, people from colonised countries had a “parallel interest” with the Nazis in defeating imperial nations such as Britain and France.

He compared the behaviour of Britain and France’s black soldiers to the notorious mass rapes by the Russians in eastern Germany and Berlin.

“Every town in southwest Germany could tell stories of rape by black soldiers”, which was “no different to the Russian” practice of systematic rape, Mr Aly claimed.

Some pupils are spending just an hour of their school lives learning about the Holocaust, according to research which suggests there is too much variation in how the events of the second world war are taught. The survey of 2,100 teachers, funded in part by the Department for Children, Schools and Families, reveals that, despite it being a compulsory part of the national curriculum, some schools are skimming over the Holocaust while others dedicate 20 lessons to the subject. The survey comes after a report from the Historical Association this week questioned the quality of history lessons in state secondaries more generally, finding that thousands of pupils were being allowed to drop history at the age of 13 with the curriculum being squeezed into two years. Today’s report concludes that pupils are receiving on average six hours to learn about the Holocaust, but that figure masks a far greater variation. The survey was conducted by the Holocaust Education Development Programme (HEDP), part of the Institute of Education, University of London.
