An 83-year-old foiled a raid on a jewellery shop when he knocked over a sledgehammer-wielding hoodie and ripped off his balaclava.

The unmasking shocked the robber and his accomplice into discarding their weapons and fleeing empty handed as the man shouted “I’ve got your DNA”.

The man, named as William Grove, intervened as a crowd of 50 looked on.

Mr Grove, who is 6ft 3ins tall, walked up to the attackers as they pounded the reinforced windows of Ernest Jones in George Street, Richmond, yesterday lunchtime.

Gabrielle Henry, manager of WT Spa in the street, said: “I saw this old guy go past and push one of them over. He grabbed his balaclava and shouted ‘I’ve got your DNA’. The other guy was still hitting the window but then they ran off.”

Nick Thompson, a 35-year-old IT technician, watched the drama from his office. He said: “I thought it was brilliant that someone can have the guts to take on someone much younger. There must have been about 40 to 50 people watching but he was the only one who thought, ‘I’m not putting up with this’.”

After the tackle Mr Grove merely smiled at the crowd before walking to a nearby stop and boarding a bus. Mr Thompson said: “He gave this great little smile and then walked away to catch his bus.”

Sammy Coco, deputy manager of Gant, said he chased the would-be robbers with three others including a seven-year-old boy who took down the number plate of the getaway car, a silver Vauxhall coupe.

Today Ernest Jones said it wanted to reward Mr Grove. Spokesman Tim Jackson said: “We will be arranging to give him a Rolex watch in recognition. However it is dangerous to do this and our priority is safety of the public and staff.”

Mr Grove, who worked as a civil servant and uses a walking stick after being hit by a bus, was today giving evidence to police.

A neighbour at the private development in Richmond where he lives said Mr Grove, also known as John, was the sort who would always throw himself into the breach. Ingrid Pitt said: “It is just like John, that is something he would do, no doubt about that. He is a fantastic man.” She said his wife had died a number of years ago.

Tony O’Neill, caretaker of the development, said: “He is a great guy but very modest.”

A PUZZLED poppy seller from Weymouth has spoken of her shock after being told to pack up and go home by police.

Jan Hinton, 51, has been visiting homes collecting for the Royal British Legion in Littlemoor for the last decade.

She was left stunned when police warned her to stop selling poppies after dark and to stop collecting around Hallowe’en.

Mrs Hinton and poppy partner Charlotte Warren-Sinclaire, 16, were visiting properties in Honeysuckle Close when they were approached.

“The officers said they had received reports of suspicious callers,” she said.

“We understand they have to answer all calls so we showed them our identification badges, our tins and our poppy trays.

“We even had certificates from our Royal British Legion area representative, but it didn’t seem to matter.

“They just told us to stop. They told us not to collect after dark and not to collect this week because it’s Hallowe’en.

“They said if we carried on they’d pull the plug on the Royal British Legion doing house-to-house collections.

“I thought I was hearing it wrong.”

Mrs Hinton, of Culliford Way, said collecting during daylight hours – and avoiding the Hallowe’en period – was impossible.

She said: “Charlotte is at college and everyone’s at work in the day. We don’t collect past 8pm anyway.

“We don’t collect on Hallowe’en night or bonfire night and we don’t do weekends because people don’t appreciate it, so that only gives us eight days.

“We can only collect house-to-house. We’re not licensed street sellers, we have to knock on people’s doors. What else are we supposed to do? I’ve never known anything like it.”

Mrs Hinton said she informed police when and where she would be selling and gave contact details.

“I guess the officers were aggravated because they had to come out and investigate,” she added. We expect to see police cars when we’re out but we never expected that reaction.”

Littlemoor councillor Mark Tewkesbury said: “Why should these people be stopped from selling poppies all of a sudden? It’s just wrong.

“Jan’s been doing it for 11 years. She’d notified the police beforehand and it just seems bizarre to me.”

A Dorset Police spokesman said: “We received a call from a member of the public that we followed up.

“Many people, particularly the elderly, are genuinely worried about bogus callers and we encourage them to notify police if they are concerned.

“I cannot comment on what the officers said but we were quite satisfied that it was nothing untoward. We do not have any problem whatsoever with legitimate collecting of this kind.”

Dr. Frederich Toben - prevails against Jewry

Dr. Frederich Toben – prevails against Jewry

An alleged Holocaust denier has won his fight against extradition to Germany.

Dr Gerald Toben, 64, is accused of publishing anti-Semitic material on his website.

The Australian academic is wanted in Germany to stand trial for posting the alleged items between 2000 and 2004.

The German authorities claim they are ‘of an anti-Semitic and/or revisionist nature’.

In the European Arrest Warrant issued in October 2004, he is accused of approving of or playing down the murder of the Jews by the Nazis.

But District Judge Daphne Wickham ruled the warrant invalid today at the City of Westminster Magistrates’ Court in London, saying it contained inadequate detail about the offences.

It neither states the name of the website nor where the propaganda is said to have been published from – only referring to the ‘world-wide internet’.

After discharging Toben, Judge Wickham granted him bail pending an appeal after imposing strict conditions which include a £100,000 security.

A PAIR of insurance workers from Sheffield who plundered customers’ personal details then used them to scam hundreds of thousands of pounds from policy holders have been jailed for five and a half years.

Failed Zimbabwean asylum seekers Edward Dzingai, aged 27, and Gregory Maumbe, 26, both worked at Norwich Union’s Pomona House in Pear Street, Ecclesall Road. They used their positions to gain access to the personal insurance policy details of 28 “gone away” customers – clients for whom the company had no current address – often targeting elderly or vulnerable people.Ian West, prosecuting, told Sheffield Crown Court: “Dzingai and Maumbe’s positions in the organisation gave them access to the computer databases – the names and details of the policy holders and copies of the signatures of these ‘gone away’ cases.

“They would use this information to manufacture fraudulent surrender letters and the funds would then be transferred to the bank accounts detailed on these letters.”

They targeted 28 policies yielding more than £655,395 between September 2005 and October 2007.

They also tried to steal a further £144,000 but failed.

When police raided their homes and examined their computers they found details of another 53 policies worth £1.5 million.

Dzingai, of Windy House Lane, Manor, and Maumbe, of Fretson Road, Manor, pleaded guilty to one count of conspiring to obtain money transfers by deception.

They claimed they were forced into the scam by men who threatened to hurt their families in Sheffield and Zimbabwe.

Maumbe admitted receiving up to £40,000 for his part in the operation, while Dzingai said he received between £1,500 and £2,000 for five different transactions.

Sentencing them to five years in prison for the deception case, plus an extra six months for possessing fake passports, His Honour Judge Patrick Robertshaw said:

“You were actually possessed of freewill and made the choice to play a crucial, critical role in this fraud over a significant period of time.
“The breach of trust involved was serious, flagrant, calculated, deliberate and protracted.”

The prosecution claim Allan Manhire, 26, from Liverpool, arranged the bank accounts through which the money was laundered. He faces trial at a later date.

Several other defendants including Maros Kabelik, aged 27, of Upwell Street, Grimesthorpe, and brother and sister Sean and Kelly Oaks, from Prenton, Merseyside, have admitted opening bank accounts into which the money was laundered.

Kabelik will be sentenced next month, while Sean and Kelly Oaks were given 51-week prison sentences suspended for two years.

Kelly, 23, must carry out 200 hours unpaid work for the community, while Sean, 19, is the subject of a six month supervision order and must complete 150 hours unpaid work

Britain risks a surge in Right-wing extremism if it fails to help its white working class weather the recession, the equalities chief will warn today.

Trevor Phillips will break with years of political convention to call for the law to be changed to enshrine positive discrimination in favour of disadvantaged whites.

His startling intervention in the race debate is a rebuke to Harriet Harman, who earlier this year trumpeted plans to make companies discriminate in favour of women and ethnic minorities.

Mr Phillips said ministers should allow councils and education authorities to introduce ‘positive action’ programmes aimed specifically at young whites unable to compete with highly skilled immigrants because the ‘need is so great’.

And he warned that immigration has fuelled ‘resentments that are real and should not be dismissed – resentments felt by white, black and Asian’.

The chairman of the Equalities and Human Rights Commission set out his thinking to the Daily Mail ahead of his appearance at a CBI event on immigration today alongside immigration minister Phil Woolas.

Mr Phillips said failure to help white families hit by the downturn could drive them into the arms of far-Right parties similar to those that have brought turmoil to Austria, Belgium and Holland.

He also warned that ministers needed to acknowledge the resentment by some whites over what they see as unfair help given to blacks and Asians.

‘What we are seeing is that there is a whole group of people, a large proportion of whom are white, who are going to suffer from this crisis who are going to be the people we should want to help, particularly because they come from the wrong side of town,’ he said.

‘We are going to have to do something special for them. We are going to have to put extra resources where young people can’t compete with migrants’ skills.

‘And in some parts of the country, it is clear that what defines disadvantage won’t be black or brown, it will be white. And we will have to take positive action to help some white groups, what we might call the white underclass.’

And he warned: ‘We know what the political consequences are because we have seen it on the Continent.”

‘If we ignore the fact some white groups are going to be disadvantaged we will end up with the same kind of conflicts we have seen in Austria, Belgium and now Holland, where the anti-immigrant racist Right-wing parties get a big boost.

Our new immigration minister, Phil Woolas, has passed his time in parliament as an unremarkable New Labour apparatchik. Like many former presidents of the National Union of Students his career path doesn’t seem to have been unduly held back by principle. But one thing has singled him out and that is a visceral line of rhetoric on race and immigration. The BNP have a big presence in his Oldham constituency and he apparently decided years ago that, while he would contest the BNP electorally, politically it was safer to pander to their views. On one occasion Woolas rushed to commdem a muslim teacher for wearing a veil (without waiting for the industrial tribunal finding).

Now as immigration minister he has adopted a keynote rightwing policy of setting a limit of immigration. This is pernicious. People do not distinguish between asylum seekers, economic migrants, the dependents of people lawfully settled here and even bona fide British citizens (like the writer) who happen to be non-white.

And, as Phil Woolas knows perfectly well, he has no power to stop people seeking asylum, which would be in breach of our obligations under the European convention on human rights. There is freedom of movement within the European Union so he cannot stem that flow of economic migrants.

And British residents have the right to bring their wives and children in, whatever their colour. So for Woolas to raise expectations that he can somehow cap, or even reverse, the number of immigrants in the country is futile.

Worse is the way that Woolas is peddling every rightwing half-truth about immigration. He claims that the government has “to face up to voters’ concerns about the level of immigration”.

But the truth is that the government has done little else but pander to white fears on the subject. Since 1997 the government has passed seven separate pieces of legislation on immigration and nationality, all designed to make the system tougher. Woolas claims that it is “too easy to get into this country”.

Tell that to my constituents who wait years to be joined by their partners or dependents. Or explain this to the young children detained for months in detention centres for no other crime than being the offspring of asylum seekers. The truth is that the legislation has never been more draconian, and asylum seekers and would-be migrants have never had fewer rights.

If the numbers of migrants continue to rise it is because of the “pull factor” of an (up until now) booming but deregulated economy sucking in cheap labour. And there has been a global rise in the millions seeking asylum from war, pestilence and famine.

We all know that a recession leads inexorably to a rise in racism and xenophobia, but a cap on immigration is not the answer.

MORE than 50 million African workers are to be invited to Europe in a far-reaching secretive migration deal, the Daily Express can reveal today.

A controversial taxpayer-funded “job centre” opened in Mali this week is just the first step towards promoting “free movement of people in Africa and the EU”.

Brussels economists claim Britain and other EU states will “need” 56 million immigrant workers between them by 2050 to make up for the “demographic decline” due to falling birth rates and rising death rates across Europe.

The report, by the EU statistical agency Eurostat, warns that vast numbers of migrants could be needed to meet the shortfall in two years if Europe is to have a hope of funding the pension and health needs of its growing elderly population.

It states: “Countries with low fertility rates could require a significant number of immigrants over the coming dec ades if they want to maintain the existing number of people of working age.

“Having sufficient people of working age is vital for the economy and for tax revenue.”

The report, by French MEP Francoise Castex, calls for immigrants to be given legal rights and access to social welfare provision such as benefits.

It is not a new development, we must accept it.” Ms Castex said: “It is urgent that member states have a calm approach to immigration. To say ‘yes’, we need immigration … it

The proposals include the creation of a “blue card” system, based on the American green card, that provides full working and welfare rights.

Blue card holders would be entitled to move freely across the EU, setting up home in any of the 27 member states.

Last night Sir Andrew Green, of Mig rationWatchUK said: “England, with Holland, is al ready the most crowded country in Europe.

“As it is, we have to build the equivalent of seven cities the size of Birmingham over 25 years for the immigrants the Government already expects.

These would be ridiculous proposals if they were applied to the Britain. “Yet again the ‘one-size-fits-all’ policy of the EU produces absurd results.

“The Government must ensure that these work permits are not valid for the UK.

“Higher levels of immigration are the last thing we need with a recession approaching.”

And Shadow Home Secretary Dominic Grieve said: “When ministers are talking tough about efforts to control immigration, they need to provide a clear explanation that national policy is not being undermined through the backdoor in Brussels.”

The UK Indepen dence Party leader Nigel Farage attacked the move as “an outrage”. He said: “The sooner Britain gets back control of immigration policy, the better.”

The proposals –  part of the Africa-EU Partnership signed in Portugal last December – also warns of the negative effects of mass immigration and calls for “better integration of African migrants”.

It calls too for a compassionate approach to the eight million illegal immigrants already living in the EU.

It states: “Irregular migrants must not be treated like criminals. Many risk their lives seeking freedom or the means of subsistence in Europe. As long as the EU has a higher standard of living than those countries to its south and east, the temptation to come will exist – especially if there are jobs to be had.”

The declaration calls on the EU to assist African governments to set up migration information centres “to better manage labour mobility bet ween Africa and the EU”.

Other centres are expected to open soon in other west African states and later in north Africa. The first was the job centre opened in Bamako, capital of Mali, on Monday.

Yesterday the Daily Express revealed that, in an apparent contradiction of immigration policy, thousands of migrants – like Kanoute Tieny from Mali – are being given up to £5,500 in grants by the EU to return home to Africa.

French president Nicolas Sarkozy wants to implement an EU-wide immigration plan by the end of the year when he stands down as head of the Council of the European Union.

This body implements policy proposed by the European Commission and discussed by the European Parliament.

French immigration minis ter Brice Hortefeux has represented all the 27 EU states, including Britain, in a succession of whirlwind tours through west Africa to help create a strategy.

Last night the Home Office said the UK had nothing to do with this EU plan.

A Border Agency spokesperson said the initiative is aimed at promoting legal migration routes in the Schengen area of the EU which the UK opted out of. The area includes most but not all member states.

“We therefore retain full control of our own borders and our asylum system.”
